Focus and Scope

Focus

The International Journal of Review in Mathematics Education (IJRME) is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing scholarship in mathematics education through rigorous, evidence-based review research. IJRME provides a global platform for synthesizing existing knowledge, identifying emerging trends, and addressing critical gaps in mathematics education theory and practice. The journal exclusively publishes comprehensive review studies that employ systematic, analytical, and critical methodologies to consolidate and evaluate the state of the art in the field.

The journal covers all dimensions of mathematics education, such as:

  • Curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment

  • Cognitive, sociocultural, and affective aspects of learning

  • Teacher education and professional development

  • Technological innovations (e.g., AI, digital tools)

  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion in mathematics contexts

  • Cross-cultural and comparative studies

  • Policy analysis and educational reform

Scope

IJRME welcomes high-quality contributions that utilize diverse literature review methodologies, including but not limited to:

  • Systematic Literature Reviews
A systematic literature review is defined as a method for identifying, evaluating, and interpreting all available research relevant to a specific research question or topic area (Snyder, 2019). This method is crucial for ensuring that the review is comprehensive and unbiased, ultimately contributing to the validity of research findings. Based on this definition, IJRiME provides an opportunity for researchers in the field of mathematics education to publish their research results based on the systematic literature review method.

  • Meta-Analyses
Meta-analyses are defined as systematic reviews that aggregate and analyze data from multiple studies to provide a quantitative estimate of treatment effects or exposure outcomes. Meta-analyses play a crucial role in evidence-based medicine by synthesizing results from various studies to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient outcomes (Baumler & Irnich, 2024). Meta-analyses not only enhance the precision of treatment effect estimates but also help identify patterns and inconsistencies across studies, ultimately contributing to a more robust understanding of clinical interventions. Therefore, IJRiME encourages researchers to publish the results of their meta-analysis research in the field of mathematics education.

  • Bibliometric Analyses
Bibliometric analysis is a method that uses statistical analysis and quantitative techniques to study publications, authors, institutions, and other elements within a specific research field. The primary objective of this method is to understand the dynamics, trends, and impact of research within that field, providing insights into its structure, development, and key players (Donthu et al., 2021). Moreover, the application of bibliometric tools, such as scientific mapping, enhances our ability to visualize complex relationships and identify emerging areas of interest, making it a valuable resource for researchers seeking to navigate the vast landscape of academic literature. Therefore, IJRiME accommodates researchers who will publish the results of their bibliometric research in the field of mathematics education.

  • Descriptive Systematic Reviews
Descriptive systematic reviews provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of a topic's existing research, focusing on identifying patterns and trends within a body of knowledge. The primary objective is to determine how well the knowledge base supports or contradicts existing propositions, theories, or findings, ultimately establishing a context for further, more detailed research (Pare & Kitsiou, 2017). Therefore, IJRiME strongly supports researchers in the field of mathematics education to publish the results of their descriptive systematic reviews.

  • Scoping Reviews
Scoping reviews are a method of literature review that aims to identify and map the breadth of evidence available on a specific topic, often to inform future research or systematic reviews. Their objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing literature, including different study types, methodologies, and key concepts, without necessarily focusing on a specific research question or engaging in a rigorous analysis of individual studies (Pollock et al., 2024). Therefore, IJRiME strongly supports researchers in the field of mathematics education publishing the results of their Scopung Reviews research to increase the scientific knowledge in the field of mathematics education.

  • Critical Systematic Reviews
A Critical Systematic Review is a rigorous, structured approach to synthesizing research evidence on a specific topic, using explicit methods to identify, select, and critically appraise relevant studies. The objective of this method is to provide a comprehensive and reliable summary of the existing knowledge, identify gaps in research, and inform decisions by synthesizing evidence to answer a well-defined research question (Patel et al., 2022). Therefore, IJRiME is very enthusiastic to be able to become a publication platform for mathematics education researchers based on the critical systematic review method.

  • Umbrella Reviews
An Umbrella Review is a type of evidence synthesis that examines multiple existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses on a specific research topic. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive and high-level summary of the evidence base, going beyond the individual findings of those reviews and synthesizing their results. This helps to identify areas of agreement and disagreement, assess the overall strength of the evidence, and ultimately, inform decision-making in areas like clinical practice or policy development (Belbasis et al., 2022). Therefore, IJRiME strongly supports researchers in the field of mathematics education publishing the results of their Umbrella Reviews research to increase the scientific knowledge in the field of mathematics education.

  • Theory Development Reviews
Theory Development Reviews, also known as theoretical literature reviews, are a research method focused on analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing existing theories and frameworks relevant to a specific research topic. The objective of this method is to gain a comprehensive understanding of existing knowledge, identify gaps in theory, and build a solid foundation for new research or theoretical development (Nurse Education Today, 2017). Therefore, IJRiME strongly supports researchers in the field of mathematics education to publish the results of their theory development review.
