Policy on the Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

Policy on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-Assisted Technologies

The International Journal of Review in Mathematics Education (IJRiME) is firmly dedicated to fostering transparency, upholding ethical standards in authorship, and maintaining the highest levels of academic integrity. This policy aims to provide comprehensive guidance for authors, readers, reviewers, and editors concerning the appropriate and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted tools throughout the manuscript preparation process. It will be subject to periodic review and revision in response to advancements in this dynamic and rapidly evolving technological domain.

This policy specifically pertains to the application of AI in the composition and linguistic refinement of scholarly writing, excluding its use in data analysis or interpretation conducted within the methodological framework of a study. Authors may utilize generative AI and AI-enhanced tools exclusively to improve linguistic clarity and overall readability. However, the use of such technologies for core academic functions—such as developing research questions, formulating theoretical or pedagogical arguments, deriving conclusions, or articulating scholarly recommendations—is strictly prohibited. All AI-generated content must be produced under rigorous human oversight. Authors are obligated to critically assess and revise AI-generated text to ensure accuracy, objectivity, and completeness, given that AI outputs, while often presented authoritatively, may contain factual inaccuracies, logical inconsistencies, or inherent biases.

Responsibility for the content of a submitted or published manuscript resides entirely with the authors. Any employment of generative AI or AI-assisted tools must be transparently acknowledged within the manuscript, with an appropriate disclosure statement to be included in the published article. This requirement is intended to promote transparency and accountability among all stakeholders—authors, readers, peer reviewers, editors, and contributors—while ensuring adherence to the terms of use of relevant AI technologies. Notably, this policy applies solely to the creation of original content, including newly developed manuscripts or newly added sections in revised submissions; the application of generative AI to previously published work is expressly forbidden.

Permissible Applications of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

Authors may employ generative AI and AI-assisted technologies during the manuscript development process, provided their application aligns with ethical research standards and preserves scholarly rigor. Acceptable uses include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Utilizing AI tools for the correction of grammatical, syntactic, and typographical errors, as well as for enhancing the linguistic coherence and fluency of the manuscript.

  • Applying AI-assisted citation management tools for formatting references by the journal’s style guidelines and for generating accurate bibliographic entries.

  • Employing AI-powered plagiarism detection software to verify the originality of the manuscript and ensure compliance with academic integrity policies.

  • Leveraging AI-based analytical tools for processing complex datasets and for presenting research findings through accurate and articulated visualizations.

All such uses must be governed by human supervision, and authors retain full responsibility for validating the accuracy, reliability, and scholarly appropriateness of all AI-assisted contributions to their manuscript.

Prohibited Uses of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies

While AI technologies can enhance certain technical aspects of manuscript preparation, their use is subject to strict limitations to protect the integrity of academic authorship and scholarly discourse. The following uses are explicitly prohibited:

  • Authors must not delegate the generation of principal manuscript sections, such as the introduction, methodology, results, and conclusion, to AI tools. These components must reflect the authors’ original intellectual labor and critical reasoning.

  • The fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data, as well as the generation of misleading results through AI, constitutes a severe breach of ethical standards and is unequivocally forbidden.

  • Generative AI or AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors. Similarly, AI tools are not to be cited as sources within the manuscript or reference list.

  • The journal prohibits the use of generative AI or AI-assisted software for the creation, alteration, or manipulation of images or visual elements within submitted manuscripts.

These restrictions are implemented to safeguard academic integrity, uphold accountability, and preserve the trust of the scholarly community. Any breach of these stipulations may result in immediate rejection of the manuscript or further action in alignment with the journal’s ethical guidelines.

Ethical Considerations

Authors are expected to adhere to the highest ethical standards when integrating generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in their scholarly writing. Any instance of copyright infringement, plagiarism, or unethical conduct—such as the unauthorized use of intellectual property or misrepresentation of sources—will be considered a serious violation of the journal’s publication ethics. Such infractions may result in the rejection of the manuscript, retraction of a published article, or the imposition of other sanctions as deemed appropriate under the journal’s legal and ethical frameworks.
